Having served in Vietnam, I was drawn to your post. To me, letters from home were my lifeline and were what kept me going. You did a beautiful job and captured the reality of that war without over-dramatizing it, as so many movies have done (none of which I've cared to see). When asked about my experience, I just say it was hours or absolute boredom sandwiched in between moments of sheer terror. Congratulations on your first-place ribbon-it's well deserved.

You're more than welcome. I don't think people, particularly young people, realize the value of handwritten letters today. I learned in Vietnam that they can be priceless.

Omg! What a tragedy!
To lose the love of your life in a war is horrible.
These letters are tearing my eyes.
I could not bear the thought of how sad and horrible war is.
Your words are so meaningful.
My congratulations for this much deserved win.
Marie

Aw, thank you, dear Marie. I'm so touched by this. War is horrible and my family went through three: WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Three of my five brothers served in the military, different branches. The Vietnam War was the closest to me and affected me deeply. I view war through a family's prism.
Sending you my best today as always,

This is an excellent memorial piece honoring the many soldiers and families who gave their fathers and mothers, sons and daughters for the betterment of our countrymen. So many have answered the call in the face of jeering crowds who ridiculed them. War is ugly and blows up things and kills people. It is tough but it is always fueled by greedy leaders who want more. Thanks for the realism.

Thank you for the wonderful review and generous compliments. Yes, my brother received both a Purple Heart and loathing comments. He did not deserve that. He was a fine man and a soldier.

This touching story reminded me of the many tears I shed when I came home from my job at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) where I was often the first government official returning Vietnam veterans saw. Many were broken and maimed. I was strong and helpful for them, but went home to cry. Full Metal Jacket almost gave me a nervous breakdown. After about 6 months on the job, I was okay. Thank you for your creative rendition of that period of time, and for the movie clip.

Thank you for the wonderful review and tender comments. I appreciate it so much. My brother didn't sugar coat it for us at home and made sure we all understood the collective sacrifice made there. He married a South Vietnamese nurse whose parents were murdered by the Vietcong. After Steve died, and the war ended, she returned to Southeast Asia to look for family members.
Thank you for your kind service to our veterans. I can imagine how hard that was. Big hugs!

A very powerful story you have written and though it is supposed to be a fictional story, the very same account was and still to this is day played out in many families. And, sadly will play out over and over again as long as there is war. Good job!

Your war story contest entry is excellent in every respect--well told, with specific details, realistic in its setting, well-organized, and very moving in tone and choice of "road" metaphors.

Thank you for sharing this War Story writing prompt with us. It was well written and very emotional. Many of my high school friends fought in Vietnam and didn't come home.

Thank you for the lovely review and personal comments. Our collective loss was great. My personal loss is still with me but I live on in the affored freedoms away from communism, at least for now. My brother wanted freedom for everyone.

This is truly beautiful, Sally. I'm sure it is going to do well in the writing contest. My heart goes out to those families whose loved ones, on duty far away, made the greatest sacrifice possible. Thank you for sharing this! xo Janet

3rd try at reviewing this. FS keeps freezing on me. Loved the story via letter. Tough time for those of us who were teens and young adults then. More to say but fear screen freeze so will save.
