You have really captured all the subtle, and not so subtle, tones of color as well as buildings that can be imagined in the variety of stone, carved by wind and water. I like the way you also bring in the surroundings of flora, fauna and weather. Very nice.

Such amazing scenery, who would've thought that there are these beautiful formations in Utah! We drove through Utah on our way home from the Grand Canyon and Zion national Park. You created such beautiful imagery and descriptions with your choice of Words.
Very well done!

Hi CrystieCookie,
This is the most lovely free verse about the Bryce Canyon's beautifully carved landscape. Described in brilliant detail, this poem lent such vivid imagery that I felt like I was there, standing on the plateau with the wind in my face and sun to my back. Your elegant last lines ended this beautiful poem with grace.
" Headward erosion has left behind honey-caramel formations
all in stones which exude regal reverence--
serene, clean, and silent."
Best to you in the contest.
Have a great weekend!

Crystie, you wrote a beautiful and very descriptive poem. :) You made me wish to see this Bryce Canyon in Utah. Those "coral reefs in summer heat" look like people waiting to awaken, all of them standing silent waiting for the time of their release. This is a very good offering for the Free-Verse Contest. Thank you for sharing.

Ah ha, you hinted at another name for the hoodoo formations, that the local Native Americans in the past century called "Painted Faces." Thanks for reading and the five stars!

I enjoyed the read, however, I just don't understand poetry that doesn't rhyme. I'm not uneducated, I just don't understand it. You should read some of mine and tell me what you think. Thanks

I really like your description of Bryce Canyon. Your accompanying photo enhances it so well. Your words "cinnamon", "honey caramel" give me a sense not only of the coloring but the hues and 'taste' of these formations. I really liked, "shine like coral reefs in summer heat" and "tangerine on lemon gold". The lack of pronouns and articles, "see smattering of cinnamon" and "hear rushed wind.." is a little off-putting and while I realize it is a style choice, it is confusing to the ear and can be added without sacrificing rhythmic intent. Great poem.

This is a majestic and beautiful poem, with the scene clearly described with vivid imagery. I particularly like the last two lines, reverence, serenity and purity. Best wishes for the contest.

Thanks for reading and reviewing.

Your use of colour descriptions made this poem visually rich as well as verbally - you took me on a magical journey through this astonishing landscape, with the creatures who live there and the visitors who come to admire. That 'old spendor' is certainly a source of 'regal reverence'.

I am not a fan of free verse, but that's just me. What a picture! My, my, what could have formed such beautiful castles out of rock? Is this in Utah or New Mexico? Maybe you should tell us in your notes. Beautiful description. Well done Crystie. Nancy

Thank you for your kind review. Bryce Canyon is in southern Utah.

That's what I thought! We are neighbors. I am in Nevada.
