This made a very good point. Peter judged the police just because of their uniforms that they were racist. He assumed that they were harassing the protestors. Peter was biased against the police. What is amazing is that he assumed the police were biased against the protesters.
My guess that the police gesture did not sway Peter in his bias.
Good lesson here and I enjoyed the read.

It seems everyone else got this, but I'm confused, because the only stereotyping I saw was Peter's, unless there is an (unjustified) assumption that all police "profile." The cops were not harassing the protesters, they were there to protect them should any counter-protesters arrive. And why would it be a surprise for a cop to say thank you for helping people, just like they do every day? Like I said, I'm confused as to just what the point is, other than Peter being a bigot.

It is sad. I will admit that it is sad when people jump to conclusions like that. Peter had no idea what the conversation was between the officers and the protestors, and sometimes people only see what the want to see. There is always a middle ground in everything, but unfortunately, people refuse to look for it.

There are good and bad in everything, but most cops take a job for little pay that most are unwilling to do. Then, we expect them to put up with thugs day and night without standing their ground. I wouldn't have their job. But I can bet those who want to get rid of the police would be begging to have them back in a few weeks. Thanks for sharing.

Is it not more likely that there are good and bad actors in any given spectrum??? After all, pre-covid when we performed those ancient traditions of extended family gatherings the twenty or so of us couldn't agree on which game of cards to play post dinner and dessert... I don't blame you for thinking he was about to react to Peter's rant but you must have been pleasantly surprised at what he said. Obviously, he hadn't heard it, and this would be an example of the good intentions held by most of the Police Force.
