OOps! Truth or candor doesn't always pay off when you're in the military. But your outlook on life and finding humor in the story is awesome. Have a great day!

Hi Earl,
I'm afraid you lost me somewhere between Tact and Candor. I don't know much about life in the military, being a Canadian, and free of the draft. In fact, the only sergeant I've ever known was Sgt. Schultz of Hogan's Heroes (John Banner, who died January 28th of 1973).
But I pieced enough together to see that O'Grady "was a real gem"! It would be difficult to respect an officer like him, or follow him into battle. You know darn well he'd be behind everyone!
You should write more about your life in the Armed Forces, Earl.
Nicely penned!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Thank you Kimbob. If you check my portfolio I've written quite a few of my Army adventures, most featuring Smuckatelly. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review my story.

Good stuff! I'm not advanced in the subject but a thumbs up. ( Here's the example.) I would have used : and where you put on the off limit, I would have added an - en dash, I believe they're called?

Earl, Sgt. Corp,

I enjoyed your humorous story and explanation of the differences between candor and tact.

Well done!

Patricia

This is a good chapter. You did a good job to tell the story about the relationship of O'Grady and Corp. Because O'Grady was promoted and skipped a few ranks. This didn't make Corp respected O'Grady.

The scene and conversations are very vivid. God job.

Thank you for sharing.

I'm retired Air Force. My son is about to retire as a combat engineer. Listening to you and him is a real treat. I feel your pain. Although tact was my strong suit, candor got me in a heap of trouble several times in my career. We called guys like O'Grady ROADs. The sign on O'Grady's desk was our definition of Diplomacy...same thing. Enjoyed the read. Brought back a lot of good--and some not so good--memories. Thanks for sharing the story. Stay well.

I enjoyed the humor in your quick short story. I was in the Navy for twenty four years and could write a book on all the silly things that went on during my career. I realize that some of the foolishness came out of my own mouth.

Earl:

This story reminds me of some of the stories my dad used to tell me
about being in Germany during WWII. He will rise up to sergeant in the
ranks and then express some of your "tact" to someone which normally
ended up in some brand of brawl - needless to say, he would get
busted back to private.

Good luck in the contest.

Earl, this is a great story! I served too and candor had no place in my Army either. Your example is funny, but it's commonplace in the military. Thank you for making me smile.
Excellent writing.
Best wishes in the contest.

Good writing, plenty interesting information about your detail. I liked the way you handle it. Also, a thank you for your service. A small suggestion on your next writing is to shorten your sentences. It makes reading more pleasurable to read. I learned that lesson in a writing class.
