Made me misty eyed, as I read. So much regret and wistfulness in a single piece of pie. It's a short story that says a lot. While we don't know why Robert left, we feel the grandfather's pain.

Compelling. Poignant piece, beautifully written with raw emotions brilliantly conveyed. You did well to underplay, forgoing superlfluous pathos by making the grandson departed for school, vs dead.
