All I can say is "wow". Your words capture in poetic form one of America's best poets. You captured her full life, she did so much. This poem is a detailed history lesson that could be taught in school. Nothing but a six here. I always loved Maya Angelou's poems and I am sure she would be proud of your tribute to her.

An amazing poem about a remarkable woman. She overcame so much adversity to create beautiful and powerful poetry. Thank you for the extensive notes, it put a lot of things into context.

This was an amazing poem that went into great detail. I admire your rhymes, as well. I found your author's notes just as captivating as the poem itself. I never knew much about this woman, but I feel like I know her now. You did a great job with that. Thank you so much for sharing, and best wishes to you.

Very, very good ode-style poem with extremely pertinent biographical information about Maya Angelou. I must admit I have not read more than a single poem of hers in years, but I remember reading her main book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" maybe 30 years ago. I kind of think I would change "Clinton's reign" to "Clinton's term." But other than that, I thought this is well-written. The last stanza is particularly satisfying in tone.

Thank you so much for this very kind review and your thoughtfulness which I deeply appreciate! You're absolutely right about 'reign' I was searching for a grander word and probably failed:( Term is a good alternative but I'm thinking of something else. I love having suggestions like this which are always welcome. Thanks again Debbie

What a wonderful tribute to a lady whose life started in the depths of dispair, but rose to show others how they too could rise against the injustices. My three great granddaughters were taught in school about her and I am thrilled they could see her strength. Thank you for sharing.
Smiles, Carol

My grands are mixed and I believe they need to learn about other women that are not allowing life to squash them. I want them to be strong.

Who better to teach them? If they read her, there's no doubting their strength!

A wonderful tale of a brilliant woman. Trauma causes some dreadful responses. After my NDE I couldn't paint for 10 years. This is small against her being raped at age 7. I still turn to books instead of humans. And animals delight me. Maya was meant to go on to be an author and dance her native songs. In short, she found her true and amazing self. Well done my friend. K xx

Thank you so much for this wonderful review, Kay! I'm sure Maya's message is that we will not be beaten by challenges along the way. In fact we rise stronger and triumphant. Your kind words and support are, as ever, greatly valued. Take care Debbie xx

This is a wonderful rhyming tribute. I had not heard of Maya Angelou before. Thanks for introducing her to me. You mixed personal and societal injuries and healing in this poem. You wove the small details and the larger societal shifts together skillfully.

I don't often award six stars, but this simply was too good to earn less. I must confess, being an Aussie, I'd not heard of her before. Now I'd like to know more. Is there a biography available on her?
You write superbly and over the next few days I'll search for more of your work. Thank you for making my day more knowledgeable. I really enjoyed this poem.
