Downloading Pictures

Thread Started January 20 at 8:24AM

<< Thread Modifed January 20 at 8:25AM >>

I have not posted anything on here since last June. Yesterday I tried to post a poem but could not download a picture to go with it. I notice that the old format has been updated and replaced with a new grey area containing a folder image in the left hand corner. I have clicked on the upload button and selected a picture from one of my files which then appears in the big box. but when I click on it to download onto FS I get the little black 'x' that tells me my picture is not there. I have tried this procedure several times using Jpeg pictures and with the required pixel size. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.
I just want to add pictures to my poem just like before. Thanks for reading.

That could happen for a couple of reasons. But usually it's that the file is too large. Try resizing it to 400 pixels in width and uploading the resized file. The extension should be .jpg or .png.

Thanks,
Tom

Brenda,

This is how I add my pictures:
1. go to posting page
2. click where it says add pictures from your computer [something like that]
3. when you click there, you should see what looks like a frame around some words
4, in it there are 2 options--drop files OR click to add one
5. click on the words 'add one'

6.that should take you to your computer where you have your pictures saved
7. click there on pictures to open the file
8. select your picture then click open [should be right close to where you find you picture] YOU MUST OPEN THE FILE WHERE THE PICUTRE YOU WANT IS FOUND

9.now a thumbnail picture that you are adding should show up in the left corner [very tiny]
10. NOW click where it says 'upload' [a little box with this]
11. the you will be asked to verify upload etc. if there click yes & proceed

[it sounds to me like you are clicking directly on something without first opening your picture file. Don't forget to click on open when you find the picture you want. I know you can do this. I just hope I wrote it well enough to help].

I have now tried everything possible that I know of to download a picture with my poem but nothing works. I have followed Jan's instructions thoroughly and tried re-sizing the picture as Tom suggests.
I am now considering my membership here as I don't feel my poetry is complete without some sort of artwork to go with it. I don't know what else to do.

Hi,

I don't know if you have tried to use the "FanArtReview" pictures...I have been using those pictures for all of my poetry...and they work wonderfully...Its easy to use and there is a great variety of them, I often find the inspiration for a poem after searching through them...Perhaps you might want to check "FanArtReview" out, if you haven't already done so...It may help you make a decision....

Just Some Thoughts!

Hi mrsmajor,
thank you for your reply. I don't use the Fanart site because it is difficult to find a picture that fits with the poems I write. I suppose I could try and write a poem using this site and see if that downloads, but I really would like to use my own art/pictures.
Thank you for your suggestion and I will give it a try.

Brenda, don't give up. I'm sure they changed the way this was done to try to make the process easier. Not for everybody apparently. I was a little confused when this new 'thing' appeared, but a little experimenting showed me how it worked.

There have been others confused too, and this has been discussed in the forum before, so you're not the only one.

Why don't you try Jan's instructions one more time and then get back onto this thread and tell us where they didn't work. They sound pretty good to me.

here they are again - or my abbreviated version of them. I'm going to open another tab and do these as I write to make sure I get them exact...

1. Click on 'Post a Poem' in the Write Menu

2. Click on the blue link that says 'select from your computer'

3. The next screen that pops up is the one that looks totally new and it is the one that has caused some confusion... There is a BIG grey box that says 'Drop your file(s) here or click to add one.

Click anywhere inside that grey box.

4. Now a separate window opens up showing files on your computer. You may have to navigate through your folders to find the one where your picture is stored. If this is the only uploading you do, it will probably take you to the correct folder right away.

Scroll if necessary to find the picture you want. Click on it and then click Open

OR

Double-click on the picture (or filename)

PS I have NEVER found the size or the type of file to be a problem (despite what the instructions say)

5. Now you're back in FanStory. The BIG grey box should now have a mini version of your picture in the top left corner, along with the file name and the file size.

Click on the blue Upload button just under the grey box.

6. Now you should be back to how things used to look with a screen that asks you to confirm 'Do you see your upload?'

If you do (never failed for me) click on YES - CONTINUE

7. Now you should be able to post your poem as normal...

Did I say abbreviated - I was obviously joking! But if you carefully follow those steps and it's still not working, let us know exactly at what step it failed and what you saw on the screen....

PS This is all assuming that you want to use a picture that is already saved onto your computer. If you are trying to do something different to that, let me know.

Good luck.

Hi Steve,
thank you for taking the time to reply to my desperate pleas. I have done as you have said several more times but the outcome is still the same. I can go right to the verify page where it asks if I can see my picture but there is nothing there accept a small black cross.
I did notice that when my selected picture appears in the left hand corner of the download box there is a red box with an x in it on the right hand side.
Perhaps this is the problem but if I click on it the selected picture disappears and I have to then re-select my picture. I have spoken to Tom about this and I sent him two pictures from my file for him to download and they worked perfectly for him.
Is there a certain setting on my pc that I should have to make this work? Although I have not changed any settings on my pc.
Thanks
Brenda:))x

Hi, Lady Brenda

Your picture/pictures sound like they are not in the right format.

Try converting them from what they are to PNG.

Another thing I do is download the pictures to Flickr, which is a site to store pictures etc. BUT you can also download to there and then download back to your piece. You can just imbed the photo at the top of the body of your piece, the place the actual poem goes. You can even place pictures within the poem using that service.

Hope this might help. You can't leave us, we, ya know, likes you and stuff....

Hi Mikey,
great to hear from you.
I have only used pictures that are in the required format as the title of the pictures specify that they are either jpg or png. This is driving me nuts as I don't know how to resolve it.
Thanks for your suggestion I will double check
