It's not new.

<< Thread Modifed January 31 at 10:04PM >>

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

-Solomon, Ecclesiastes 1:9

As I was sitting here, marveling at some of the absolute insanity that gets plastered over these threads, I was thinking to myself (as happens occasionally), "When did right wing politics in the USA turn so completely mental?"

Each and every time I ask this question, it dawns on me, this is nothing new. Republicanism has been a safe haven for lunatics of every description for at least 100 years, if not longer.

I'm not referring to inane policies or ideologies, so much as absolutely bat-shit crazy beliefs about what is going on in the world. And so far as I can tell, this IS largely limited to one side of politics. Sure, Democrats will tell you Tricky Dicky Nixon was evil (a fact not denied by that many, in so far as I know), or that Ronnie Raygun was a brick short of a load, long before dementia set in. But they won't tell you (in all seriousness, and 100% believing it themselves) that their political opponents are space aliens or lizard people, or demons sent from the bowels of hell to destroy everything that is pure, or married to a transexual (not that there's anything wrong with that, other than it's a steaming pile of crap), or, quite literally, cannibals.

One day I'll get around to researching this in depth, and putting together a proper essay on just how whacked-out these nutters are. Please note: I'm not referring to just anyone who votes Republican or simply likes some of their political ideology -- I'm talking about the ones who believe any or all of the above -- and I don't believe that's a tiny handful.

Until then, please take a look at this article. It suggests that conspiracy theories like QAnon are not so much magnetic rabbit holes that cleverly draw unsuspecting people into them, just that they dish up the sort of incredible nonsense that certain types of people are predisposed to seek out -- just like the talking heads who run self-funded radio programs and podcasts. I disagree with the suggestion that it isn't mostly a far-right thing, it is. Nevertheless, Morris & Uscinski make some very good points. Enjoy.

RE: It's not new.

LOL I'm not a Republican but here is confirmed evidence that Kamala eats puppies.

Terrific.

Within an hour, Alex Jones will be broadcasting the news that Kamala is opening a new chain of supermarkets selling puppy food -- using the tagline "It's not what you think!"

By the end of the day, OAN will be running stories about pizza shops staffed by liberals selling child & puppy pizza (available in thick crust or thin).

By Thursday, Joe Rogan will be interviewing puppies that have escaped the clutches of Ms Harris, cataloguing the hideous suffering they endured before nibbling off their own heads to slip the leash and make a slippery dash for freedom.

Kid Rock and Ted Nugent will combine to record a spin-off of the old Paul Anka classic, "And they call it puppy sludge". The single will be released some time in August, or sooner if they can find one of their friends who can spell the title before then.

Last, but not least, Donald Trump will claim true Messiah status when he announces that he, personally, has discovered that injecting puppy blood cures Covid.

And B1 and B2 (otherwise known as Annie Oakley and Hopalong Cassidy) will be his personally chosen disciples, breaking the news, right here, exclusive on FSTV.

Thanks a bunch.

RE: It's not new.
This was very creative. Well done! In all seriousness, you should join some of the family writing contests. You would do quite well and fit in perfectly with myself and DragonSkulls.

RE: It's not new.
Thanks for the invitation -- that's kind of you. Lately (meaning the past couple of years), I tend to be around for a month or so, then off on walkabout for several months. I'm not reliable enough to join any groups. Maybe one day.

It's not a group -- we just randomly join the many family contests that are hosted by Jan. They are great and will definitely get your creative juices going. You can see them right on the contests page. The most recent one bans same-sex couples. Great writing challenge.

"Fuck me pink", as Gman said in his review of your wonderful story.

I wasn't sure if you were kidding until I saw it myself.

Your story is an awesome take down of intolerance and bigotry, and easily the most creative and well written of all the entries. I voted for it and I encourage others to do the same.
