RE: Only the Facts, Please
Message edited:

Steve,

as of 2018, according to Washington Center for Equitable Growth state that
over the past 50 years, the number of U.S. children living in poverty has been cut in half?a tremendous accomplishment. Yet according to the most recent year of consensus taking ( that I could find) nearly 10 million children, or 13 percent of children residing in the world?s richest country, still live in poverty. This includes more than 2 million kids living in deep poverty. High levels of child poverty are shameful and lead to bad outcomes for our country.

The good news is that substantial further reductions in child poverty are within our nations reach. I firmly believe that this administration is focused on this important issue.

Young children under age 6 are more likely than any other age group to be poor, with nearly one-quarter of children living in poverty and nearly half living in low-income families.

2 Children are also the largest age cohort participating in public benefit programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and research shows that these programs that help families meet their basic needs are effective at lifting families out of poverty and promoting child well-being.

3 When benefit programs such as nutrition assistance, Medicaid, and tax credits are taken into consideration, the child poverty rate in the United States is reduced by half.

4. Reducing poverty and providing access to the basics such as food, housing, and medical care is of the utmost importance for young children. Research shows that poverty has deep and lasting negative effects on child development by introducing stressors that affect the foundations of brain architecture as they are being laid. Much like a house needs a solid, well-constructed foundation. A child?s developing brains require a strong base.

5 Programs such as Medicaid and CHIP, SNAP and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), TANF, housing assistance, LIHEAP, tax credits, and Supplemental Security Income should be understood as smart, evidence-informed policies that give children a promising start in life.

A few things to consider during the Trump administration. You know, the guy who everyone lies about and we eat it up, yet, Trump lovers, they love to feast on every misrepresentation of President Biden.

Unfortunately, instead of addressing the needs of low-income and middle-class families through policies such as paid leave, child care, and increasing the minimum wage, the Trump administration and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) pushed for deep cuts to programs that help families afford the basics, all to pay for a $1.5 trillion tax cut that largely benefits wealthy.

A few facts about poverty and children living in poverty.

Poverty is linked with negative conditions such as substandard housing, homelessness, inadequate nutrition and food insecurity, inadequate child care, lack of access to health care, unsafe neighborhoods, and underresourced schools which adversely impact our nation's children

The effect of poverty on education is a very serious issue and everyone of us, regardless of what country we live in, needs to consider this.,

Poverty reduces a child's readiness for school because it leads to poor physical health and motor skills, diminishes a child's ability to concentrate and remember information, and reduces attentiveness, curiosity and motivation.

As for our country, the causes of relative poverty in the US are complex and revolve around the following: Societal inequity with associated disparities in pay, skills, opportunities and employment. Inequitable distribution of resources. Labor market issues which adversely impact wages, skills and benefits

To give Anna a little shout out- she spoke of her experience with uninterested parents and unruly children. Poverty has been found as a major barrier, which has blocked the way of parents to perform their parental duties with full attention. Furthermore, economic deprivation leads to depression and stress in the parents and ultimately dysfunction of the family. So, parents stress directly affects the children as well.

To make matters worse, the pandemic has incurred not only high economic costs but it has also produced with restrictive procedures such as schools closures and the changes of learning methods. Some children simply lacked the tools, the home support and the ability for long distant learning. Impoverished family often had no internet, even if the school provided computers.

For goodness sake, many of us in this forum live in the United States. I think most of us will agree that we should do everything in our power to lift children out of poverty and provide them the right tools to stay out of poverty.

At the very least, Biden?s proposal is proactive and striving to decimate poverty along with addressing climate change and strengthening our infrastructure. So this is communism conjured by Satan?s children? Ignorance is tragic and sadly, in this case- laughable.

I believe Biden and his administration is trying desperately to create a better America instead of acting out as the last administration Make America Great Again! Laughable to say the least- great for the rich and power, instilling white fear and undermining every department in our government to enrich his purpose.

RE: Only the Facts, Please
One in four of your children live in poverty. So much for your socialist safety net...that cant even afford a universal lunch program.
And so again I ask you why so much time spent trying to influence US to be more like you and your indigent government. Why arent you one among the the oppressed masses of your own Countrymen demanding freedom from socialism...?

RE: Only the Facts, Please
Michael, the difference between me and you is that I am happy to admit that there are problems in my country which need to be addressed and we currently have a government that is trying to address them. On the other hand, you constantly try to present your nation as the greatest, the best, the most wonderful, the most patriotic and every other superlative you can think of while steadfastly ignoring the data which shows that is far from the truth.

As I said, we do have issues with child poverty. Yet, as the figures Jimi presented show, our problems are not as severe as yours.

School lunches? Shall we discuss that? Traditionally they have not even been a thing in NZ schools. Certainly when I was growing up, parents sent their kids to school with a packed lunch. Only over the last decade or so have societal changes meant that some sort of action was needed

So yes, many children in our schools now receive nutritious school lunches although the program is still being built and expanded to include more schools. I teach (as a reliever in two different schools) In one all students are enjoying the benefits of a free lunch, but in the other, which is in a wealthier district, students provide their own lunch.

Your constant assertions that NZ can't afford to provide school lunches is simply nonsense

Have a nice day. Take some time to look at the figures Jimi posted. Then take a look around where you live and see if there are any opportunities to volunteer at a food bank or perhaps round up a 'gang' to do some charitable work.

My heart sings when I see that video about motorcycle gang members helping out in their community. Some of the 'heaviest' gangs operating in our country have recently joined in the drive to get our country vaccinated. Not the role models most of us think about, but we'll take help where we can get it to get to the end of this pandemic.

I am referring to free/reduced lunches for those that qualify.

No where did I say I was in favor of universal lunches. That term was NEVER brought up except by YOU.

Also, your video is from someone outside the USA. YOU are so hateful to those who post here that don't live here, yet you post foreign videos!

Again you have twisted the facts and posted a video that is NOT relevant to my original post.

Jan, I don't think for a moment that Michael was trying to conduct any rational argument against points made by you. As shown in almost everything he posts, he is incapable of doing that. The video is directed at me, as if finding random videos casting my country in a negative light will have any effect on my thoughts and actions.

If I were to react in kind, I would have very little trouble finding hundreds of videos casting America in a bad light. What would be the point in that?

Michael, our posts crossed...

I guess you don't believe that your country has a 'two-tiered' society or that it governs along socialist principles.

Could you explain food stamps to me? We don't have them here.

RE: Only the Facts, Please
Of course...it is the same principle that rules you without lunch now.
Government control to train society to depend on it...them.

Indeed We have a ruling class committed to Our enslavement, the same you support from devil's island...however this is not Our founding promise, birthright, or future if We fight to retain Our freedom.
Therefore We have hope...and are not confined to trying to eliminate anyone else's chance to breathe how, when and where they should choose.
I'm sorry you let your sword rust...not so much that freedom upsets you...any man who will not stand will be overthrown, since time immortal.
