The defense for tariffs is that in theory they make domestic competitors stronger. Problem is, when it comes to steel tariffs, if the tariff is only on the raw material then it makes the US domestic competitor weaker. Trump's last round of steel tariffs put US domestic keg manufacturers out of business, because Chinese steel (which they were using) was still cheaper than US steel after the fact, and there was no tariff on Chinese kegs.

Some context is needed for why the US did this. China was, and is increasingly, underwriting and financing the massive dumping of Chinese products on world markets to wipe out all competition. Xi Jinping is behind it all. I'm hearing that a majority of Chinese people already think they are at war with the US and refuse to buy ANY of our products. And there are way heavier tariffs imposed by China against the US than the other way around. That is why Tesla produces there, to avoid those tariffs. China has absolutely benefited from this arrangement and used their tech to make its own highly competitive EVs, which it will soon be trying to sell to us from Mexico.

My printer says it's made in Thailand. Ha. Well it's an Epson, so really it's Japanese. Maybe I did look at that before buying it.
