Ha! I was just going to post the URL for the loss of $90B in tourism
Lancellot, you are an idiot. Your lack of empathy for anyone facing brutal losses to jobs and businesses puts you right up there with the dumbest of MAGAs and cultists.
Is this making America Great Again? Can you not foresee ANY consequences of Trump's policies?
Many small businesses are going to go broke from this Is that somehow a win in your eyes?

And then I forgot this:

RE: Are we there yet?
Steve I think that is a personal attack, so you may want to edit your comments and perhaps extend an apology.
H, I have a question about the local and state government employees which clearly comprise the largest percentage of the total amount. If I am misunderstanding this please feel free to correct me.
Are local and state government workers considered to be part of the "deep state"? If not, why not and vice versa.
Does that mean that public school teachers, nurses, road workers, prison guards etc will lose their jobs because of DOGE cuts?
What is the end game?

I'm sure you're right about redirecting money into the pockets of the rich, Victoria. I've seen many interviews of people sacked for "poor performance" who obviously were dedicated to their professions, and performing them with great conscientiousness. It is typical of these two miscreants (Trump and Musk) that they haven't even got the courage to be honest about why these people were terminated. It's not good enough to destroy their current livelihoods, they want to ensure these people will never be employed again.
Some people rightly deserve the title "scum". In my opinion, what these two have done to thousands of honest workers earns them that designation without question. I fully concur with Steve that it is impossible to understand how any decent person would find their actions acceptable.
RE: Are we there yet?
CD, how do you know that the firings are unjust? Are you privy to all the information that DOGE has access to, to say that the "thousands of honest workers" are good and DOGE (particularly Elon and Trump) are "scum"? If not, in face of this sort of broad brush Orwellian language, I challenge you to put up or shut up. And be specific.
You are not in our country and you are not affected in the way that we are from the over 120% of debt to GDP ratio caused by massive overage in government spending over past decades. Do you think Australia should increase its debt threefold to be like America?
RE: Are we there yet?
Who was the worst president in terms of debt accumulation? Asking for a friend.
Re Tourism downturn, consider this:
Manufacturing employs 11m, tourism 12m.

Re: Gloria's questions:

Well, not really at least in theory. State and federal workers have their separate domains and jurisdictions. I have never worked for a government so I am not privy to the workings of it all. But I can ask the Interwebs, which say that federal workers have the Merit System Protections Board to which they can appeal their terminations. And now it gets complicated. Outside of Washington D.C. which is a federal district, federal workers still work and reside in states. And there is a a lawsuit regarding fired federal workers, which may play out differently depending on what state those workers are in.
When people refer to the Deep State I assume they are referring to secret government departments functioning with some form of autonomy and lack of public accountability. Most of that probably falls under the CIA and the Pentagon. Their activities may occur within states. Everything requires funding. Federal work might be contracted out anywhere.
I met someone yesterday at a party who is convinced that outer space does not exist, and that all satellites and space exploration is all a massive hoax. To him, the entire public and private industry must be part of the Deep State.
Does that mean that public school teachers, nurses, road workers, prison guards etc will lose their jobs because of DOGE cuts? What is the end game?
Not unless AI and robots can make up the difference in the real need of goods and services. If someone gets fired, someone somewhere will still need to do that work. Nurses, definitely not for now. But teachers, a lot of them should think real hard about how useful they really are. Anyone who is teaching out of a textbook is theoretically replaceable by AI in the near future. Teaching will increasingly become about catering to the niche needs of individuals. AI should be a great educational boon if done right and it should rightly wreak havoc on teacher unions.
As to whether teachers will lose their jobs, Trump's proposed 2026 budget calls for the elimination of Head Start. To balance the budget, we need to make up a shortfall of well over $1 trillion a year, and spending for this year was already allocated by the previous Congress. For 2026 it will ultimately be Congress rather than the executive branch that sets the limits of spending.
Here's a better conspiracy theory for you. The cuts that we are seeing now are not about Trump and Elon. They are just bigger ants on a globe doing the bidding of their AI masters. If you think the changes now are crazy, imagine how AI is going to change everything in the next 10 years.
RE: Are we there yet?
Craig,
This is what bothers me...
The use of the word "scum" seems to bother some, yet when trump called senator Adam Schiff "scum" I guess that was acceptable.
Also when trump gave Gov. Newson, of California the new nickname "newscum" I guess that was okay too.
Those words are not something I read...I watched him as he made those comments...also his opponents have been called "scum" more than once,
I guess all of that is acceptable coming from the
now sitting president of the United States, yes its okay coming from trump.
People all over the world are aware of his language, he doesn't hide what he thinks of others and yet some don't seem to mind...well I do....I'd like to be able to respect the now sitting president, but I cannot...he doesn't respect others...it's disgusting..

You want me to be specific, Harambe? That's a little difficult given the sheer number of angles from which this action on the part of the deranged duo is pure evil. The attempt to cover it from multiple sides would be overwhelming, I think. So I'm happy to comply with your request for details, but maybe you'd like to choose the starting point.
Which would you prefer I address first -- the callousness, the partisanship, the malice, the self-interest, the illegality, or the the sheer stupidity this schoolbus load of hand-picked OINKs have demonstrated towards families whose only "crime" was to have one or more breadwinners dedicated to serving the public in their government jobs? Let me know, and I'll get on to it with so much detail it will make your eyes water.
As for whether Australia should triple its foreign debt, why should we be that stupid? Although, in all fairness, I wouldn't be surprised if that came to pass. Lunacy such as the ridiculous AUKUS deal we signed ourselves up for will go a long way towards achieving that goal.
Just as a little teaser with where we might go with this, you might enjoy this article. It points out how during the last presidential campaign, Trump promised a “complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government,” yet not a single one of Musk's DOGE cronies has any auditing qualifications whatsoever. Not only that, many of them have very little work experience of any sort. Just the kind of experts you'd want taking a razor to your federal workforce. Speaking of which, it's lucky government departments aren't charged with manufacturing shaving gear. Musk's DOGE employees might have been SOL when it finally comes time they need it.
Bring it on, and we'll see the effects of such a genius course of action. This will be fun.

That's a good question, Gloria, one that the media should be explaining but are not.
Does that mean that public school teachers, nurses, road workers, prison guards etc will lose their jobs because of DOGE cuts?
Teachers, nurses and road workers, in the US are not Federal employees. They are state and local government employees, and they are unionized.
Prison guards or COs, there are federal, state, and county employees, depending on the jurisdiction. But generally those are historically understaffed positions, like in my state. I doubt any federal COs would be fired, there are staffing level laws in place or safety. When they are broken, it is normally because of a lack of officers to inmates. Few people want to be cops outside or inside the walls.
