I thought I'd start this separate discussion because I didn't want to distract from Emma's excellent points on the other thread. In this brief clip, Bernie Sanders just about says it all. Maybe I'll add to it later with what other thinking individuals are saying. It's really NOT about immigration.

Every time you and Steve use words like "cheato", "rapist", etc. you make it all about Trump and his personality. Too late to pretend to go back now. Is Bernie correct? That remains to be seen. We will find out this weekend based on how those Marines are used. Keep in mind that our military members swear an oath to the US Constitution, not the President. They are not Optimus robots. The average Marine is smarter, more disciplined, and more conscientious than the average American citizen their age. Their permitted scope of use in domestic matters is extremely limited. And Bernie Sanders is a broken record who has been largely saying the same things for 50 years. I would never call Bernie stupid, but he is just a Senator, lacking executive experience.

Well he makes some good points, particularly suggesting that Marines might not be the best tool in that situation. Protection of ICE resources is fundamentally a policing issue, and the most the Marines can lawfully do is make a visual show of force, which civilians are not used to seeing. Note that he is a FORMER Marine captain. He doesn't know what ammunition etc they have been equipped with. They obviously picked him specifically so they could ask him about concentration camps for Japanese people, which has nothing to do with anything.
I know plenty of retired Marines. One of my brothers is an active Marine major. His immediate reaction would likely be to shrug his shoulders at the deployment. It's the job of captains and their lieutenants to keep their Marines from doing stupid shit like shooting up a house.

No I don't agree, and your insinuation that US Marines cannot control themselves is incendiary and insulting. They are well aware that they are in a civilian context. All commissioned US Marine officers hold academic degrees, many of them from prestigious universities. The chance that they would allow their soldiers to mow down civilians like a Boston Massacre reenactment is less likely than the two of you mowing down a nursing home with your own farts. If they did, they would all face court martial if they did, probably receiving worse fates than thumb tattoos. Several things would have to happen before Marines opened fire on civilians. First off, they will not be carrying chambered rounds or even shooting rubber bullets. They are mainly there to facilitate deescalation.

So, exactly as Steve said, this suggests they have to be told not to do it. Without a college degree, your average plod marine would just shoot up houses.

No, I said that specifically because they interviewed a former Marine captain. He provided an extreme example from many years ago. Your opinion of the stupidity of Marines is the problem. There are dumb people everywhere, but the Marines do their best to wash out the really dumb and dangerous candidates. When's the last time you heard of a Marine shooting up civilians?
