Cornwall in Autumn by Janet Foor

An eerie mist prevails across the moor
where kings and queens once traveled long ago.
Their horses can be seen now as before
with spirit riders racing to and fro.

The hedgerows cross the hills, then cross again,
dividing fields with heavy underbrush.
A labyrinth-like path leads to a glen
where moss and lichens flourish wild and lush.

But as I gaze across the heath to home,
I feel a loneliness I can't explain.
This solitude may cause the frail to roam
and seek a gentler life in which to reign.

With pride, I claim this rugged hinterland
and pray its feral purity will stand.

Author Notes
We planned a trip to England this fall to celebrate our anniversary and our milestone birthdays. Some friends asked us to go with them to England last fall to their family reunion with some additional visits around England. So we became Reunion Crashers for a few days and then took a lovely extended trip through England with our friends. If we had waited for this year, the trip would not have happened due to the coronavirus. We feel very blessed and I fell in love with Cornwall, it's rugged countryside, castles and cathedrals. Truly, God is good.
