Worth The Weight by LisaMay
poem of hope writing prompt entry

I hated my fat self.
In my distraction reaction
to avoid the void of my youth,
I flew from the truth.
My body of evidence
confronted at every turn.
You are fat, fat, fat,
their taunts burned.

I bore witness against myself
and turned away.
Head down, hunched, I studied
the art of camouflage.
To prove I disapproved,
I lost my logic and my self.

In another place, it was my time
 to find a turning point,
with knowing in the growing
of a new perspective.
As self-acceptance broadened,
self-doubt diminished.

What remains
after losses and gains
is worth the wait.
I have found how to be free –
moved on from self-hate.
I now am wise.
I'll fly in the face of fragility.
Your eyes tell lies –
I can look and see the real me.

Writing Prompt
Write any type of poem to stir hope.

Author Notes
Author's Note:
This is told from the point of view of an overweight young man I know who suffered mental health issues because of being bullied about his size. It took him a long time to realise his self-worth and understand that other people's perceptions did not need to define him.
