Freedom Taken, Freedom Given by LisaMay
Emotional Dependency writing prompt entry

When under stress, with my life a mess,
I loved to drive – it made me feel alive.
If I felt down I’d hit the road, leave town,
in my safety zone where I could be alone.
Out on the highway I could go my way;
near and far, when in that car,
my sense of self was free,
feeling happy to just be me.

The hum of the tyres and shifting gears
helped me escape my domestic fears.
Rolling along unwound the years –
made me forget the tracks of tears.

That car to me was freedom’s song,
a cocoon where I could belong
whenever things went wrong.
Night or day, I could run away and hide inside.
I lived out a fantasy and ignored my reality.

An accident I did not foresee…

Asleep at the wheel,
no pain did I feel in that tangle of steel.
But the hurt was intense, like a lightning bolt,
when I found that I was at fault.
My driving would come to a halt.

I took one of life’s thumps,
was grounded for months,
lost my freedom to drive here and there,
but that mishap made me more aware
of life’s beauty and how to pray.
My life had been saved from an early grave.
Now walking became part of my day,
and I grew to like riding my bike –
I made friends along the way!
Later, some of us would catch the bus
if we wanted to go see a show.

Sometimes a sharp lesson is a blessing,
though it feels like it ends what you know.
God has His plans for making us see;
Pay attention, is His heartfelt plea.
You are part of a family.
