Waiting and Wondering by LisaMay Lost - Flash Fiction writing prompt entry |
It was confusing. Surely I should’ve been one of the first to be needed? I was new around here and, because I was relatively small, had been pushed to the back. I was now getting squashed into a far corner by more recent arrivals. “Get off me! Get off me!” I was so uncomfortable, but no one was listening, especially the fatso who had just jammed himself almost on top of me. This wasn’t turning out at all like I expected. I was one of the chosen ones, specially selected from amongst my own school group. I’d mistakenly assumed that once I was taken to the mystery destination I’d really be appreciated. I felt it was what I was born for. By giving them a taste of what I could do, my sacrifice would be honoured with praise on everyone’s lips. Meanwhile, I had to wait. It was cold and boring in our cramped quarters, where I was always overlooked. Only the ones above me ever went anywhere. As the days passed and I lost count, I began to realise I was a rank outsider. One day, as another dawn showed a chink of light at the entrance to our chilly room, I heard muffled voices. My spirits rose; I’d lost hope of ever being taken to the front. “What’s that godawful stench?” Suddenly, some of my companions were being jostled aside and I was pulled roughly towards the light. “Here it is! I found it. It’s this little packet of fish. I remember buying it a while ago. It got lost at the back of the fridge, under a jar of jam. Now it’s lost its label, but it’s clearly past its use-by date and lost its freshness.” “Thank goodness it’s garbage collection day. Get lost, Mr. Smelly!” My cries of rejection and humiliation were lost as the rubbish tin lid banged down.
