Lockdown Lamentations, Revised by LisaMay
Funny poem about your job writing prompt entry

The virus my job did sadly rob
of much of its pleasure,
now I have too much leisure.
This disease thief has caused more grief
because tourists don’t come to our shore
like they did before in swarms galore.
They don’t knock on the door
to come inside where I am a guide
in a house museum.

We never will see ’em,
this month or this year –
it’s a dead atmosphere.
So to keep it all ready and neat as a pin,
I work as a cleaner, for when tourists begin
to come back for a visit.

I’ll be more explicit:
This historic house is stuffed full of things,
so I dust and I wipe so that no dust clings.
Surrounded by beauty, my heart surely sings
and I glide about like I’ve sprouted wings.
I shake out the rugs to dislodge any bugs,
and polish the wood ’til it shines so good.
It’s all really lovely, top quality class;
such wonderful paintings, the china, the glass,
the carvings, the brass – and oh so much more.

But the best thing about it, this job I adore,
is that I can do things that I’ve not done before.
There’s no one to see me, I’m free as can be,
so I slide down the bannisters, laughing with glee.
I can thump on the piano (though with no skill endowed),
it sure is great fun when it’s just not allowed.
I thumb through all the books and bounce on each bed,
cartwheel down corridors, whatever’s in my head.

Uh oh! I’ve just spotted something that fills me with dread!
The security cameras are still turned on;
I guess this is going to be my swan song.

Author's Note:
Some of you may have read this poem when it was written from the point of view of losing my job as a tour guide. This version fits the contest brief which required the poem to be about actually having a job.
