Six Siblings - William by Bill Schott


I am the youngest of six children. Born in 1955 in Otter Lake, Michigan.

Left high school in my senior year, at their request, and finished graduation requirements through the local community college. I worked at a service station until 1974 when I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

Completed basic training at MCRD San Diego, California and was trained as an artillery meteorologist at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. My girlfriend became my wife and we had lived in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for four years when my son, Christopher, was born.

In 1983 - Beirut, Lebanon.  The battalion was car bombed in a hotel and between three and four hundred Marines and sailors were killed.

When I returned home, my wife and I divorced. I remarried in 1986 and we have two children together.

Assigned to Ft. Sill, an Army base, as a multi-national meteorolgical instructor in 1987.  Sent to Desert Shield / Desert Storm in 1990 as an artillery battery operations chief.

Deployed to Somalia in 1992 to provide humantarian relief and, as rifle team leader,  chase war lords around Mogadishu and Kismayo.

Assigned to Sergeant Major billet, as a Gunnery Sergeant, in U.S. Support Group Haiti in 1995.

Last station as Inspector Instructor Operations Chief for the reserve artillery unit in Waterloo, Iowa.  Retired in 1998.

Attended University of Michigan and graduated in March of 2002 with a teaching certicate in English and History. Hired in July of that year; taught for fifteen years and retired in 2017.

My wife and I have celebrated thirty-three years together, my three children are all married and working at careers in both industry and education. We have five grandchildren from eighteen years to nine months old.
