Glad I Did It by HarryT
20/20 Vision Poetry Contest contest entry

Fog is increasing veiling my vision
No longer can I read street signs
Without blinking and straining my eyes
Nor can I distinguish familiar faces

I wish to see the world again as once had been
Like driving at night without halos around lights
Seeing clearly the words on a page when trying to read
Oh dear, it's time to consider cataract surgery, I fear

Hate the idea of someone poking in my eye
Read that something could always go wrong
Inflammation, infection, bleeding, swelling
Most alarming, an eyelid drooping lifelong

Should I reconsider? Is the quest for 20/20 vision
Worth the risks to put the fogginess asunder?
Or should I forget and go on in forever mistiness?

Well, after due diligence, I decide I must do it

Decided after much thought what lens to pick
I chose a mono-focus distance, the Doc said
Correction for astigmatism he would throw in
Even though reading glasses will be required
Vanity necessitated my appearance without
Glasses on my face keenly desired

Eye drops upon eye drops were steadily poured
Doc used ultra-sound waves to shatter the culprit
He carefully removed the foggy focal offender
With profession precision placed a clear plastic lens
Days of more eye drops to prevent possible infection

Then like it or not after three weeks I had to do it again
Now that both eyes are finished and working well
I live in a new world of better sight, fewer missteps
Brighter colors, cleaner light and much sharper vision
I'm indeed thankful I did what needed to be done
