What will it look like,
this "house appointed for all living?"
Death and what follows next!
Mine will be a house of green gables
with a high pitched roof
enough to shed sleet, rain and snow
nor blister in the sun.
A tepee tent to shade the tender vine.

Tall, cathedral windows to let in the light.
Stained glass that shines candles through darkness
like a brown eyed doe looking at her fawn.
Windows and doors left open
to breezes from the south
like nectar for the bee. Pungent with perfume
of lilac and honeysuckle.

But this house is only on loan
for as long as you love me.
How quickly golden pine
can be replaced with the gray cement
of mausoleum walls.
Walls that weep moisture like tears
with sodden leaves decaying in gutters.
Mushroom rot like a sucker shoot
off a tall cedar
springing up from the ground like a gallows.

But to have shared even a heartbeat with you
moved me and my joy from here to eternity.
A choir of angels sings on
in a sunshine clapboard white chapel
and I am neither afraid or alone
in that house you appointed me.
