Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
A tribute to our Fire Fighters
Courage is a Prerequisite by bob cullen

These fires are horrendous; smoke rides heavy in the air
No back burning has been done, no maintenance, no care
Flames ripping through our forests dry from years of neglect
The fine balance of Nature has sadly gone unchecked

Fires fuelled by gusting winds 'neath a rampant blazing sun
Our firey's are in combat there's a fire's on the run
They stand before this monster retreat's not in their plan
Courage is a prerequisite of ev'ry fireman

It's a daunting task facing five hundred feet of flame
To stand alone with a hose and not a hope of rain
You see flames coming at you; there's no place you can run
Our firey's are amazing they don't quit till it's done

For eight long weeks this fire's been slowly gathering pace
Destruction and scorched earth revealing fire's ugly face
Shells of homes and burned-out wrecks and people's broken lives
Then there is the wildlife as it struggles and survives

Author Notes
This poem is dedicated to the many fireman fighting the massive fires on the East coast of Australia at the moment. Also as an expression of thanks to the many overseas fireman assisting.
