Autumn began in an interesting way
as the Greek's of history have a story to say,
about the daughter of Demeter, Persephone, when taken away.

She was kidnapped by Hades, a God of the underworld.
Hades wanted her as a bride to serve in his dreamworld,
Persephone's mother was in anguish, they say, and unfurled,

A curse on the crops of the planet to diet, still today,
Until Persephone comes back to mark the start of spring, we pray.
See it was Demeter, the reason for this season, we could say.

And as it is so told, we started developing our rituals.
A long-ago Halloween event, questioned by intellectuals,
was the art of bobbing for apples, every fall 'twas habitual.

It seems, say they, the bobbing for apples was a courting game,
male's in the event were assigned an apple and instructed to be tame,
and the females would begin bobbing for the apples without shame.

The goal, you see, was for the female to grasp the apple of her eye
The man, whom she truly thought had dropped from the sky,
Knowing they would be wed and live the days bye and bye.
