Life's Laughter And Tears by LisaMay
Childhood writing prompt entry

With five boys next door, I had a wild streak,
there was no doubting – I’d never be meek!
There’s a snapshot of me stuck in a tree:
a gash on my leg and blood on my knee,
still cheerfully smiling, a happy face,
but Mum thought that I was such a disgrace.

She brushed out my tresses, dislodging leaves,
and made me wear dresses, with stupid sleeves
that snagged on the fence when I climbed over.
How utterly dense, for me – a rover.

She did it through love, and pride in her child;
Mum was the sweetest, so kind and so mild.
My dad adored her, and I could see why.
How terribly cruel that she had to die.
I was a young girl, in need of my guide –
Daddy and I were left broken inside.

My childhood stopped upon that sad day;
the rainbow ran out, everything turned grey.
Time limped along full of tears for a while –
grief stole my fun times and zippered my smile.
