Buffalo, 1981.

My house trembled as the snowplow went by, clearing the roadways for a day of Christmas shopping.

I parked downtown near my favorite shops, and decided to nurse my newborn before heading inside.

Two images appeared in front of my car, unaware of my presence behind the frosted windshield.

I watched in horror as a man beat a little girl, then threw her into a van.

Incensed, I reached for my door.

But, my motherly instincts held me back; and I thought, "He could harm me, or worse, my son."

Thankfully, I saw his license plate as he drove away.
