Mom's Royal Math by Y. M. Roger
Children's Rhyming Poem writing prompt entry

My mom says that math is fun,
I’m just not sure I buy it…
But she says I shouldn’t shun
At least not ‘til I try it.

We’ll start with
operations
And the easy one is 'add'
Cuz adding’s the foundation
Of the Math Olympiad!

Addition simply tells us
To put numbers
together,
Like selfish little Queens do
When counting out their treasure.

Twelve diamonds
plus eight rubies
Equals twenty precious jew’ls.
With ten fans
and six groupies,
There’s a
band of sixteen fools.

The second
operation
Makes that selfish Queen quite mad,
Cuz
subtracting will take from
All the treasures that she had.

Subtracting seven diamonds
Leaves thirteen jew’ls in her hand.
When four fans get
distracted,
There’s twelve fools
left for her band.

Multiply’ is up next –
Let’s see what this ‘
times’ can do…
You’ll gape at the effect of

multiplication’s debut!

Starting with the dozen fools,
We will
multiply times five:
The Queen now has sixty tools
To help collude and connive…

With her diamonds and rubies,
Imagine jew’ls
times twenty:
Two hundred would be groovy,
But two-sixty makes it plenty!

I think my mom might be right,
This
math gives me new vision.
Next, the King, a Duke or Knight,
And there's still
division!!
