Poetic description of a nectarine
Nectarine by Henry King
Tanka Poetry Contest contest entry

A nectarine is
as beautiful as an
El Paso sunset
its flesh is as luscious as
that of a comely lass
its scent is as strong
as that of a blooming rose
its taste is as sharp
as that of a russet clove
its skin is sweet as love's kiss

Author Notes
The photograph, El Paso Sunset, courtesy of S. A. King-Fleenor. I was eating a nectarine when my daughter sent me the photograph she had taken. I, as several readers, thought a nectarine was a smooth skin peach. A chain grocer, Sprouts, offers white and yellow flesh peaches and nectarines along with smooth skin peaches. The smooth skin peach has a matte velvety looking skin.
