Courage is not always
a show of outward strength;
rather, its deepest measure
is often found in an
intestinal fortitude which
refuses to give up -
even in the midst of
life's greatest adversities.
Perseverance is essential
when fighting for one's life;
its fragility, while always known,
becomes like ice on a pond -
which step will plunge one
into the depths of oblivion?
Still, God's grace encourages us
to live every day to the fullest,
to step out in faith,
to continue to "be,"
to never give up,
to remain steadfast,
as long as there is breath.

Author Notes
Written while waiting for the funeral of a long-time colleague, who had battled cancer valiantly for almost eight years, to begin. She was the epitome of the saying, "While there is breath, there is hope." Nita, you are, and will continue to be missed.
