I learned to read at an early age, books were my best friends.
Mrs. Lollipops Lion, I read over and over again.
Gallons and Gallons of Guppies, My favorite when I was small.
The Library was my playground, I wanted to read them all.
In my pre-teens, it was Trixie Belden Books, enthralled, I read each one.
With a strong young girl protagonist, and sleuthing stories that were fun.
Later on in Jr. High, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
thrilled me as I rode along, Twain's world just pulled me in.
Little Women gave me sisters, Jo March, my favorite one.
Started reading it one morning, by nightfall I was done.
Then history books, my interest was piqued, Sacagawea was our guide.
Showed Lewis and Clark the western course, and I was there by their side.
Then I discovered Robert Frost and Edgar Allan Poe,
their brilliant words helped shape my life, made my love for poetry grow.
With Frost, I took the road less traveled, stopped my horse in snowy woods.
I imagined The Raven above my door, that Poe described as no one else could.
So many other poets found, I couldn't read enough,
they got me through the lonely times when bullies made things tough.
These days I read Michael Connelly, crime novels are the best.
Steeped in murder, these mysteries put your logic to the test.
I think the person I am today, was shaped to some degree,
by the knowledge and adventures, that reading gave to me.
So pick one up, I recommend, they've been around for ages.
You'll find yourself a whole new world, just waiting on the pages.
