You say it's only words and that indeed is true
Once the words are spoken it's too late to undo
The damage that has been spread by a careless thought
So think before you speak, best lesson I was taught
You say it's only words claim it was harmless fun
Rumour spread like wildfire killed like a madman's gun
Destroyed a reputation cost him quite a bit
And it's hard to douse a fire once the flame's been lit
You say it's only words and you don't seem to care
The harm that has been done, it takes time to repair
Truth has been cast aside, now no one wants to know
The cost of tongues let loose; guess that's how it had to go
You say it's only words but that's a load of crap
Gossip's a vicious way to start a violent scrap
And it's just one step removed from a blatant lie
That's how it all started, the rest you can't deny
You say it's only words you don't mean what you say
But a little truth might help you to clear the way
So search for the beginning that's the place to start
And I'd suggest by the book best to play it smart
You say it's only words the truth's now plain in view
Why should I confess, you don't have a bleeding clue
But we'll work together, remain the perfect team
Me and my best buddy, a bottle of Jim Beam
