A difficult birth

100 Word Flash Fiction contest entry

As the sun rose on Westmore Station, ten-year old Hettie woke from her all night vigil. sleeping beside her pregnant mare, Windsong.

Windsong moaned and tried her best to birth her foal. Hettie knew the mare was in trouble. Having witnessed many foals born on Westmore. Windsong was in agony, pushing.

"Dad! Windsong is in big trouble. Please come quick!"

Geoff Westmore dropped his tools and ran beside Hettie to the stables.
Buff, the old aboriginal had a rope around the foal's legs. Both men pulled hard, then, "plop." a newborn foal slid to the hay.

100 word flash fiction.
Windsong's foal was a breech-birth and Buff managed to turn him, with his legs protruding from the mare, they tied a rope around his legs and manually birthed him.
