What do you say to fear and tears
to kin of wife you've known for years
who overnight stayed at your house,
an unassuming little mouse.
She grew up, wed a stranger, and moved far away
but now by night in tears she calls. What do you say?
The news is bad, she softly cries
and you feel hotness in your eyes.
The monster fled but left its seeds
some kind word now my spirit needs.
I hate to think my troubles cause you to feel sad.
My cancer has come back, old friend. The news is bad.
