Online shopping takes over
Demise of the American Mall by Connie C

It's raining out, and I must walk.
Ten thousand steps is what I need
to meet my quota for the day,
off to the mall I shall proceed.

I've not been there in sev'ral months.
Besides my walk, perhaps I'll shop.
I might find something that I want
that maybe beckons me to stop.

I'm here now, but I can't believe
how many stores are gone for good.
With no replacements, so it seems,
where are the stores that here once stood?

The Sears and Macy's anchor stores
exist, but customers are few.
Stores in between are largely gone,
and I'm not seeing much that's new.

While once the mall was where one went
to shop and maybe meet a friend,
it's empty now while Amazon
is that upon which we depend.

Convenience reigns--that I'll admit.
Yes, online shopping rules the day.
The mall employees now are gone
to earn their keep some other way.

Author Notes
In a recent trip to our largest mall here in my home town, I was surprised at how many stores have closed with no signs of replacements. What happens to the employees, and how much has online shopping affected face-to-face interactions with others? I wonder how it will be in ten or twenty years from now.
Thank you for reading.
