House Sweet Home by kiwisteveh
Sonnet Poetry Contest contest entry

I sought a house wherein my bride could dwell,
a fortress safe against the savage storm;
to stand although the rugged mountains fell
and Earth itself assumed a diff'rent form.

My sweet did chide me gently; in her eyes
we had no need of castles fit for kings.
For had we not already claimed the prize
of love, and all contentment that it brings?

We chose a humble cottage; in its doors
we filled the place with laughter once we wed.
The roof may leak a little, and the floors
cry out in protest at my careless tread.

But oh, our home is bright and brave and bold;
I would not trade for palaces of gold.
