A Quatern for Potlatch
The Life of a . . . by damommy

I’m thrown away – too old to keep.
My time of usefulness has passed,
no longer in the prime of life,
now I’ve become a poor outcast.

And though I worked in strict restraints,
I’m thrown away – too old to keep.
Already I have been replaced.
I guess that shows my life is cheap.

My work performance was ignored.
Another one will do my task.
I’m thrown away – too old to keep,
but recognition’s all I ask.

I did my job without complaint.
And now I joined the garbage heap.
So goes the life of a shoelace.
I’m thrown away – too old to keep.

Author Notes
This poem was inspired by Giraffman.

A Quatern is a sixteen line French form composed of four quatrains. It is similar to the Kyrielle and the Retourne. It has a refrain that is in a different place in each quatrain. The first line of stanza one is the second line of stanza two, third line of stanza three, and fourth line of stanza four. A quatern has eight syllables per line. It does not have to be iambic or follow a set rhyme scheme.
