Young girl lost in a forest
Scared Stiff by Aussie
Halloween Poetry Contest contest entry

Mary skipped along, candies galore, going home
Forest trees dark and foreboding waving closed
Hearing laughter she turned to see a gnome
Friendly gnome, Mary supposed

Darkness fell, she hurried alone and spinning
Again she saw gnomes and goblins prancing
A magical forest with lit pumpkins grinning
Confused at the sights of whole forest dancing

Scene after scene assaulted her senses; voices talking
Sitting now from exhaustion, she was so afraid
Howling wolves and dead men walking
Wrapping her cloak around that mama made

A gruesome sight as all turned from dark to green
Mary thought the end had come to claim her life
Screaming, she picked up her heels and sight unseen
Raced for the safety of farmyard and Willie's wife

A kindly, round lady called out to her, open door
Mary encircled by the farmer's wife did scream
There now, said the round lady stuffing face with more
Don't you know it's halloween?

Author Notes
We don't celebrate Halloween per se in Australia like Americans do. I guess it is fun for you all! I just had fun writing this for kids. The real meaning of Halloween has nothing to do with trick or treat; it is when souls come down to earth.
