Robin Hood's Dream by HarryT
Classic Fairy Tale Poetry Contest writing prompt entry

Echoing sobs stop the little band of Merry Men
Friar Tuck said, "Fellas, did ye hear something?"
Will Scarlett answered "Maybe a magpie's cry?"
"It was not," Little John said, "It was a human's snivels"

"Sadness must be about," the friar said. "We need to see if we can help
I'm a bit too rotund to traipse around, you two have a look about"
Little John and Will Scarlett plunged into the forest deep
L.J. stepped through a bush line, a rabbit scampered into the woods

Both men returned to the friar who now sported an impish look
He gazed up and deftly pointed to an overhead branch
Where two green pant legs dangled willy-nilly
Will yelled, "Blimey, Robin is that ye?"

"What in the world is the matter with ye?" called L.J.
"I had an awful dream of the future," Robin replied,
"I saw a ruler name Trumpet, who spoke with enmity
Assailing all who disagreed, breaking treaties and dissing allies

The worse was he pledged to be never like us
His mother told him our story, he stomped about
Yelling the Merry Men were all just stupid
Selfishness is the smart man's mode of operation

In my dream, he lied to the angry to get them on his side
He said to me, "A smart man's mission is to
Help one's self and not care about others.
Trumpet said, "Robin ye and ye men are fools

The rich are the ones with power not the poor
An ambitious man needs them as friends.
Indeed, the whole world of the future was
Turned upside down. I watched...

Trumpet's narcissistic blundering alienated once valued friends
He even took to berating, the hard working town criers
Branding them enemies of the people and callers of fake news
Reneging on long held treaties with friends with discourteous impunity

Shamefully admiring and seeking the friendship of
Evil kings who rule their lands with iron hands.
Guys, I am really so upset by this horrible dream
That tears rise from my heart and fall from my eyes."

"Robin, it was only a dream," Friar Tuck said,
"Trumpet is only a vision of what the future might be
Such a circumstance may never happen, if his cohorts
Who support him realize something must be done.

Hopefully, they will standup and prevail upon him
To cease his imprudent behavior. If they don't,
I should think the people of his kingdom will rise up
Remove him from power. I pray that would happen."

"Ye know, Robin," Will Scarlett said, "the
Guy in ye dream reminds me a lot of King John
C'mon now, we have much work to do in
Our own time here in England."

Friends, it is up to ye to change the story
