island welcome by judester
True Story Contest contest entry

The anchor caught hold on the grassy bottom and our boat, the Aikane, tugged gently at this tether. The island was cast in an amber afternoon light.

As we rowed into shore, the pastel colored houses and beach looked like any other Bahamian island, except for one thing. There were no children or islanders about.

The sound of reggae and the delicious smell of a seafood grill drew us through the sandy streets.

Sophie's 100th birthday celebration was in full swing and we were simply swept up into the colorful festivities. She sat at the head of the table greeting everyone in her lyrical soft voice.

She asked me where my friend had gone and I pointed to a group of her giggling sisters surrounding him on the grassy dance floor.

The food served was pure island fare. Grilled lobster, grouper and an endless stream of spicy conch fritters.

By sunrise, we had thinned to a few. We made our way back to Aikane quietly.
This feeling of spontaneous love and mass friendship had filled me with an warming peace.

Two nautical strangers welcomed, to the party, as long lost family.

Author Notes
Sailing the Bahamas for a few years and this was one special memory.
