Shadows in the Mist by Aussie
Rhyming Poetry Contest contest entry

Cold winds blow, even snow
Old men shuffle, wearing poppy so red
Khaki coats flapping, heads bent low
They come to honour our dead

Ghostly soldiers from mist appear
Boy drummer, soundless tune
Bumfluff ghosts shed no tear
Waiting for waning moon

Marching cadets, music they play
Old veterans shuffle across lawn
Bugle sounds Revellee, Awake! today
Living faces all forlorn

Tears run down creased faces
Remembering mates all gone
Ghostly hands touch living places
Love from above welcoming morn

Every theatre of war is a stage
Every soldier played their part
Some returned from hellish page
Old men, old women watch new start

Young cadets, serious faces shining
Stand to attention at bugler's call
Almost children these cadets pining
To grow into men and women soldier's all

Author Notes
Contest entry for rhyming poem: On the 25th April we honour the fallen on ANZAC day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.) Young men rode their horses to the stations for signing up for war. They were full of fun horsemen. Only thinking of a free uniform and gun. The pay per week was four bob (four shillings in the old money - today would equate to roughly eighty cents. These youngsters had no idea what was facing them. Not many veterans are left today; those who are able to attend the War Memorial would be in their nineties.
"They shall not grow old that we are left grow old. Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning - we will remember them." This is a quote that is part of the service quoted at every ANZAC DAY. The term "bumfluff" refers to a young man that has just started shaving his face.
