Secretly performing marriage ceremonies for many couples
Against the ruling of Emperor Claudius Gothicus which
Intended to not have men marry, to assure better soldiers
Nonetheless, Valentine did not adhere to the emperor's rule
Thus resulting in future trials and tribulations for him to bear

Valentine passionately continued the ceremonies in secret
A man named Asterius who was to pass judgment on him in
Line with the Roman law at the time had a blind daughter who
Eventually Valentine healed and Asturius was very thankful
Nonetheless this could not prevent him from torture then death
The origin for this holiday isn't romantic at all so we are told
It tells the real story of the Christian man behind the holiday
Not in favor of polygamy, Valentine was determined to always
Encourage couples to enter into the sacred ritual of marriage

Denouncing Emperor Claudius' rule eventually cost him his life
And eventually he was canonized a saint by the Catholic Church
Years later, Valentine became known as the patron saint of lovers

Author Notes
I typically would write a love poem for this heartfelt day. I decided to try a different approach. Loving and doing what is right is not always rewarded.
