The Adventures of Flower Power
: Bullying be gone Part IV by Rasmine

Background
TY, Mark Flood, illustrator extraordinaire.

It was six weeks since Flower Power introduced Mrs. Petals to his sensei, Goldie.  One of the parents had said he disagreed with bullies having low self-esteem.  The same parent said that bullies have high self-esteem.  Flower was going to a meeting with parents, flowerlings, teachers, and students.
                                                                                                               ***
Flower stood next to Mrs. Petals near the podium.  She smiled reassuringly and then went to sit in the audience.  He recognized all the flowerlings in Mrs. Petal’s classroom.  Then he got a shock – Rose was right in the front row.  He had just mentioned this and didn’t know that she was going to come here.  She smiled at him; he smiled back.

He walked up to the podium and tapped the microphone to see if it was on.  It was, so he cleared his throat.

“Hello, I’m Flower Power.”

The flowerlings started their usual ‘Flower Power’ chant.  Then he noticed Rose was also chanting.  He grinned and addressed the flowerlings.

“Please, flowerlings, please.”

It grew quiet.  Flower began.

“Hello, I hope everyone is doing well.  I teach the flowerlings in my former teacher’s classroom.  Some parents have questioned my saying that bullies have low self-esteem.  Let us begin.”

One parent stood up, but only one.  “Mr. Power, I read a bully is found to have high self-esteem.”

Flower noticed Seedling Row was sitting next to the parent.  He smiled at Seedling and looked back at his father.

“Mr. Row, do you think a bully would be able to hurt someone else and really like themselves?”

Mr. Row frowned.  He looked at Flower then at his son.

“No, I guess not.”

“Then maybe the self-esteem isn’t real.  A bully would probably say ‘Yes, I am always right’, making them seem to have high self-esteem.”

He nodded and sat back next to Seedling Row.

The mother of the Black Eyed Susans stood up.

“Mr. Flower Power, my flowerlings love you!”

Flower Power blushed and looked down.  “Thank you.”

“I have a question, though.  If someone feels really good about themselves, wouldn’t they point out the faults in another?”

Flower frowned and then grinned.  “Well, I think if they wanted to help them.”

She smiled and sat down.

Mrs. Petals stood up.  “Hello, Flower.  If a flowerling picks on another, maybe something could be happening at home.  What do you think?”

Flower smiled at her and nodded.  “If the self-esteem exercises do not work, maybe there is a problem somewhere else.”

“Okay, thank you, Flower.”

No one else got up.  Flower Power took a deep breath and then glanced at everyone; his glance was longest at Rose, he was so happy she came.  It had been a great evening.

Author Notes
In the current psychological literature, it is reported that bullies have high self-esteem. I do not think so. I have a BA in psych, and was studying for a MA in the subject, so I'm not some silly person just making something up. This self-esteem that the bullies have is not true self-esteem. If someone truly loved themselves there would be, like Flower Power says, NO NEED TO HURT ANOTHER!

MK Flood, again, thank you, for your awesome artwork!
