My departure for the Air Force,
bade me leave my girlfriend Ann.
Our romance was on even keel,
but, devoid a future plan.
Love letters came to camp each day,
lending courage to go on.
Then, nothing for awhile, until
there was one addressed "Dear John".
"Dear John, Bill has returned to me,
from his duties overseas.
We are resuming our affair,
so, forget about me, please".
I showed my chaplain this sad note
and said to him"I grieve".
They checked my records, which were good
and my C. O. gave me leave.
Back home I knocked at Annie's house,
met her mother at the door.
She said"they're getting married soon,
don't come knocking anymore.
The stars of Heaven guided me,
sending comfort from above;
As I watched the dying embers
of this unrequited love.
Then, I bought myself a Harley
and had Texas in my sight.
For my leave was nearly over,
had to be there Sunday night.--1944
