Stories of a mermaid's love
Sing of sweet romance,
When truth be told her
Longing's just to dance,
On two graceful feet -
Free of Neptune's reach,
Unfurled as a flag to distant lands
Beyond sea or beach.
Wish to rove with sun above,
Enthralled by the chance
Of an adventure.
Mountainous expanse;
In clean air, replete.
Snow-capped -- peak by peak
Unfurled as a flag to distant lands;
Where chilling winds speak.
Dreams of nights and northern lights
Dancing beneath stars
With prancing partners
In a land afar.
Here, she is complete.
Awash, as bright hues
Unfurled as a flag to distant lands
Vanquish mermaid blues.
She shan't dare leave salty air,
Pursuing delights
High in icy realms.
Forsake frozen sights -
Dwell within the sea.
Her tail waving strong -
Unfurled, as a flag to distant lands,
Attuned to whale's song.

Author Notes
Since this contest is dedicated to IamCat I decided to go with a Lyricat style poem, which was invented by her. My poem is an ekphrastic (inspired by artwork) poem, as I also learned that term from Cat. :)
Lyricat
Although there is no specific meter, there are very specific syllable counts and rhyme schemes. Each stanza has a count of: 7, 5, 5 , 5, 5, 5, 9, 5
Rhyme scheme: a, b, c, b, d, e, F, e (F lines are repeated in all stanzas and the F line may be slightly modified IF a better poem can be written by doing so) There is a minimum of 3 stanzas.
This one is for you, Cat! :)
