Across the Rappahannock walked
brave men in blue whose footsteps balked
for it was clear that they should dread
the bloody fight which lay ahead.

River calm and pontoons steady,
for the battle they were ready.
Eyes fixed ahead upon the heights
where rebels calmly fixed their sights.

The boys in grey, prepared that day;
deployed to clearly block the way.
They had entrenched in higher ground
their strategy was more than sound.

The Union cross the field embarked,
where each of them were quickly marked.
Each line sent forth would clearly fall
as endless fire came from the wall.

Yet on they marched to make the charge
the visage of death’s face loomed large.
For every rebel casualty
the Union suffered more than three.

The north retreated, limping back
from what was one ill planned attack.
Lee in prayerful silence grieved
for losses which can’t be retrieved.

Today there barely stands a stone
or remnant of some small atone
for all the carnage and blood spilt
upon which civil rights was built.
