WHILE AWAY TIME
Going on a vacation "down South" as it is called, you can look at the beautiful, awesome, and breathtaking Blue Ridge mountains, that, reminds me of a dragon. When I visited my folks, I noticed the dirt in their part was red not brown like mine. Recently, after reading about Piedmont (USA), I knew it was what I wanted and needed to give me enough drive to keep on writing. I couldn't believe that I had pay dirt, the starting place of different kinds of music as well as musicians. PIEDMONT (UNITED STATES) As I read about Piedmont Region (USA), I learned that it is "made up of numerous rock formations of different materials and ages intermingled with one another."[1] The people that migrated into the region did the same as well. MUSIC in "The Piedmont region is closely associated with the Piedmont blues, a style of BLUES music that originated there in the late 19th century. Most Piedmont blues musicians came from Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. During the Great Migration, Black Americans migrated to the Piedmont."[1] The "Piedmont blues was influenced by many types of MUSIC such as ragtime, country, and popular songs--styles that had comparatively less influence on blues music in other regions." [1] Since there are so many outstanding topics you can associate Piedmont with like geology, music and etc., I decided to focused on one topic, MUSIC and the types of blues and ragtime. BLUES It is defined as "The genre developed from a fusion of traditional African music and European folk music, that incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, SHOUTS, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common."[2] "The pattern was of twelve lines which was three sets of four, the second one repeated the first "which is the standard pattern."[3] The pattern is the twelve lines but sometime eight lines were chosen, so it is safe to say it depended upon the musician. RAGTIME Another way to say about this style is, Its cardinal trait is its syncopated, or "ragged", rhythm.[4] JUKE JOINT Juke joint music began with the black folk rags ("ragtime stuff" and "folk rags" are a catch-all term for older African American music. [5] Ragtime or Juke joint (or jook joint) for instance, is the vernacular term for an informal establishment featuring music, dancing, gambling, and drinking. [5] Even though hip hop is mainly a type that got off in the North, you can say it is a form of intermingling and shouts. HIP HOP Now in the Northern states we have hip hop music from a sub culture. "The origin of the hip hop culture stems from the block parties of the Ghetto Brothers, when they plugged the amps for their instruments and speakers into the lampposts on 163rd Street and Prospect Avenue and used music to break down racial barriers, and from DJ Kool Herc at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, where Herc mixed samples of existing records with his own shouts to the crowd and dancers. Kool Herc is credited as the "father" of hip hop....."[6] "Since its evolution throughout the South Bronx, hip hop culture has spread to both urban and suburban communities throughout the world."[6] One important factor it was used to "while away" time and was part of them all. Through intermingling people can learn from one another and use it in a positive way. This part below is in a regular poem style. WHILE AWAY TIME To them, to while away time Was not a crime, 'cause one could pick up a dime By a rhyme. Yes to them, to while away time Was not a crime, 'cause one could pick up a dime By a rhyme. A rhyme 'bout Piedmont's intermingling. That could be told by singing, reciting, Plucking, or rapping To the beat that was most inspiring.
