I thought I'd caught a metaphor -
a robin redbreast in a cage.
Alas, that bird's been penned before.

My muse has proved a fickle whore;
she's barely worth her weekly wage -
I thought I'd caught a metaphor,

but 'twas a raven, nothing more,
a wily bird, a feathered sage -
alas, that bird's been penned before.

An eagle clasped the crag of yore,
then fell, a thunderbolt of rage;
I thought I'd caught a metaphor.

The albatross of sailors' lore
'cross oceans vast, holds centre stage.
Alas, that bird's been penned before.

The lark, the owl, the swan and more
have served their turn upon the page.
I thought I'd caught a metaphor.
Alas, that bird's been penned before.

Author Notes
Astute readers will notice sly references to poems by Blake, Poe, Tennyson and Coleridge. I tried to squeeze Maya Angelou into the villanelle cage too, but she just wouldn't fit!
