as a child
summer heat awakened me each night
fearing the searing
flames of fire;
fire trucks roar by,
follow to watch buildings burn
listen for the cry
of victims to save;
nightmares saw skin burn off
smoke-filled lungs
needing to cough;
I'm old now
have not met the searing pain of fire;
maybe this fear
preparation for hell . . .
