Dear J.W. by LoannaLois Hurting Someone contest entry |
Dear J.W.,
When you backed out of our wedding, twelve days before it was scheduled, I felt broken. We had been together since seventh grade, and I was shocked, hurt, and embarrassed. Our wedding gifts were all on display at Mom and Dad's house in the living room. My bridesmaids had bought dresses and shoes. My dress and veil were hanging in the bedroom. My heart was broken...along with my pride. I remember throwing your engagement ring at you. And to my shock, you were out in my Mother's front lawn, two hours later, looking for it. Of course you were. That was an expensive ring...and it was a bad judgement call on my part to throw it at you in anger. Looking back, even though your affairs were not the way to prove you needed to be free, stopping a marriage of friends who were more like brother and sister was. You did the right thing.I know everyone thought you were the bad guy. (your last-minute timing was not the best.) Still, looking back, you were wise enough to see what I could not. Thank you for sparing me hurt that would have surely come, and pain that was inevitable. I hear you married someone you love and have a great family. I am truly happy for you. Please forgive my never letting you know I was and am o.k. Others have told me you felt horrible later. I, on the other hand, felt relief and gratitude. You were, in fact, a good friend in many ways. And I am sorry our good friendship ended the way it did. Please accept this late attempt at apologizing and letting you know you were not the bad guy. This check should cover the value of your ring which I had found a few days later.Take your wife and family on a nice vacation. Your friend always, L.A.
