A day at school

The wind was whistling wildly, along the leafy lane
Mole was running fast to school, else he'd be late again
He met his friend the 'Squirrel', and little''Fox' as well
They scrambled through the classroom door, just before the bell

Fox and Squirrel chatted, they didn't pay attention
'Be quiet' teacher said 'Else you'll be in detention!'
'It's such a lovely sunny day, let's play games outside'
Painting pictures, bat the ball, or bicycles we'll ride'

Mole's friends hadn't heard a word, continuing to chat
'You two will stay inside' she said 'That's the end of that'
Fox and Squirrel's smiling stopped, now gloomy and so glum
Little mole felt really sad, and so he sucked his thumb

He didn't want to go out, with friends no longer there
And so he had an idea. A story he'd declare
Our mole now making mischief, put up his hand to talk
'Please Miss, I've hurt my toe, and can hardly run or walk'

Slowly limping to her desk, was all part of the game
But when his eyes met hers, he just held his head in shame
She knew that he was lying, his face had said it all
Instead of big and clever, now silly, and so small

'Headmaster now!'  teacher said, marching at the double
Feeling very guilty, he knew he was in trouble
With his big black glasses on, the Head looked down at Mole
'I am so surprised because, today the truth you stole!'

It is kind and thoughtful, when you stand up for your friends
But when it's telling tales, you will have to make amends
'Write for me, one hundred times, I promise I will try
To be very good in class, and never tell a lie'

Our mole felt sick and sorry, and tried to be 'all brave'
He really cared, and loved them, a great way to behave
And so a lasting lesson learned. He could clearly see
By being good and honest, how happy he would be
