                             ~~~~~
walls with symbols reversed by rage
doors that slide like eels through mud
a sanctuary you offer
a chance to redeem
the ring of your promise
burns my finger blind
a shield of skin ridiculed
by warring sects
cannot keep me warm
unrelenting needles
bare my blood
to the air and beasts
healers they tell me
heartless captors if you must know
licensed to demean
trafficking in rigor mortis
screams scourge my brain
I want to help
but I, too, am rendered powerless
our movements vicariously condemned
what harm is a madwoman
buried beyond
a distant bell of hope
Author Notes
Inspired by a recent chapter of Margaret Snowden's
current novel describing treatment of mental illness in the late 19th century.
This poem is from the perspective of a woman.
Intentional lack of punctuation.
Thank you to Angelheart for the wonderful artwork: A Moment of Silence.
