I see them, a never-ending crush,
pale faces all the same, sunken, empty eyes
confused and terrified
coming out of the grey churning fog
within Auschwitz, behind the gate which says,
"Work Will Free You".
I feel their confusion and pain;
their hunger for food, family and freedom grips me.
I smell the acidic sweat of their anxiety and fear;
I taste the bitterness of their humiliation.
Misplaced souls
deserving of Heaven
but mired in secret, horrid deeds of the SS;
they wait to be united with family. . .
. . .children snatched from mothers' arms,
husbands torn from love's embrace
parents taken too soon. . .
but they must wait, there is no choice
and Heaven awaits them all.
